What is Mental Health?

A common problem I see amongst people is that they don’t know enough about mental health, especially its importance. And all the things our mental health really affects. That is why we often dismiss it as something insubordinate to the other things going on in our lives.

But what we don’t know is that our mental health can influence our attitude, how we physically feel, and our overall health. It influences how we feel emotionally and physically, how we think and the kinds of thoughts that come inside our heads, what we say and how we act towards people. It is what helps us as an individual to function and thrive. It holds the power to determine how our day or even how our life is going to go. So taking care of your mental health is crucial.

I personally like to think of it like a plant. In order for a plant to thrive, we have to give it sun, water, nutrients, air, and space. Your sun, self-care, such as taking care of your body (healthy food, good sleep, proper hygiene.) Your water or what I like to call mental-care, is setting healthy boundaries with people and understanding what you can and can’t take (putting yourself first.) Your air, the people you surround yourself with, people who help you grow and not who bring you down. Your space, a safe environment that you can thrive in and further yourself in any way you see fit (emotionally, career-wise, etc.)

Mental health has been overlooked for far too long! It’s time to not only bring awareness to it and its importance, but to learn to take care of your own.
